Statement of Intent
For my NEA, I will be completing Brief 3: Magazine and Online. The demographic for my products is a socially conscious, middle to upmarket, 16-25-year-old audience. In terms of psychographics, my audience are very politically involved, advocating for issues such as mental health, equality, climate change etc. Due to growing up alongside the rise of technology, my audience are active online, particularly on social media platforms, which allows them to be up-to-date and familiar with current affairs. My audience are compassionate, often donating, helping, and buying from charities to aid those in need. Politically, my audience are likely to lean left-wing, so I intend to represent this within my products, however I will not make them explicitly liberal, as neutrality will potentially encompass a wider audience. I believe I have an advantage with this demographic, as I fit within the categories myself, and therefore know their lifestyles and interests very well.
Teenagers often get negative representation in the media, so I intend to oppose these stereotypes and instead display their compassionate and persistent nature. I think the range of current affairs stories that I hope to cover – the four categories being COVID-19, UK/Politics, World News, and Arts & Culture – will demonstrate the complexity of their understandings of society and reflect their hope for an improved future.
Due to the rise of technology and the increasing popularity of the internet, the print industry has rapidly been declining, transitioning to online formats rather than the traditional press. Rather than singular products, this incline in digital content has created brands that can be accessed across a variety of platforms. My products will be fitting for publishers such as Dennis Publishing as the simplistic house-style will make it easily adaptable across platforms, which is key in the modern publishing industry.
I intend to use a red colour scheme across my media products, because it is a prominent colour across the print industry, and very eye-catching. I will use the same colour scheme and fonts across my print and web products to create a clear brand identity. Although I plan to execute some sort of collage on my magazine front covers, I do not want to present too many stories – I do not want to lessen the severity of the issues I am reporting by overpopulating the cover. I think celebrity endorsement is a feature that would benefit my products by adding a touch of youth, as teenagers are often associated with fandoms and consumption of content from Hollywood stars. Mise-en-scene will help me characterise these fake celebrities and public figures, and to create a connection between them and the audience, most of my images will be Medium Close-Up shots. Ambient lighting will be the key to establishing professional level products. I will demonstrate a clear range of diversity through the in names of my writers and represent at least two different social groups through my current affairs stories and their supporting images.
